What is Wix Headless?

Custom built at the front. Wix behind it.

Headless means we build the front of your site ourselves, so it's fast and looks exactly as designed. Behind it, Wix still runs everything: hosting, security, forms, your blog and your content.

And you manage it all from the same Wix dashboard you already log into. Nothing new to learn, no new passwords.

Fits every screen

Change it once. Every screen keeps up.

On the Wix Editor and Wix Studio, every screen size is a layout someone has to look after. Change something on desktop, then check the tablet and mobile versions, fix whatever's moved and publish again.

On Wix Headless the layout is built to flow. You change it once in your dashboard, and every screen updates and lays itself out, on autopilot.

On the Wix Editor or Wix Studio, the heading is changed on desktop, then the tablet layout shows a large gap and the mobile layout shows text overlapping, so each is fixed by hand and the site is published again: four steps for one change. On Wix Headless, the heading is changed once in the Wix dashboard and saved, and the desktop, tablet and phone versions all update and lay themselves out: one step. Then the browser window is resized and the page reflows to fit every width.

Wix's own guide to designing across breakpoints in Wix Studio says to design on desktop, then review tablet and mobile and adjust, because overlaps and large gaps often only appear on smaller screens. On the classic Editor, the mobile version is its own layout, edited separately.

Built in code

Detail you'd normally only see on a big-budget build.

A headless site is built in code, so we're not limited to what an editor can drag and drop. We build your front end with React components, Tailwind CSS for styling and GSAP for motion. It runs on Wix's own hosting and connects to the Wix CMS you already use.

Wix Studio does allow custom code, but detail like this isn't practical to build and look after in the editor.

The glow that follows your cursor across buttons, the headlines that rise into place and the moving colour behind the dark sections are all written by us in JavaScript, CSS and WebGL, and so is the demo above.

For developers: we build on Astro, using Wix's own Astro integration for managed headless, with React components and Tailwind CSS, and Wix hosts the finished site on its global CDN.

Compared with the classic Wix Editor. Wix's help centre confirms tablets show the desktop version of an Editor site. If you're on Wix Studio, your site's responsive already, but like the Editor it can't be moved off Wix, and everything else here still applies.

Trent Estate Agents, built on Wix Headless.

An estate agency in Nottingham that shares one address with its own solicitors and mortgage broker. Their listings live in their agency software, their guides in Wix Blog, and the whole site runs from one Wix dashboard.

    Trent's old site was due to expire at the end of October. Aamir wanted a proper agency site with live listings, 33 pages of content and 25 guides, without it turning into a chore to run.

    Eleven page designs, with the repeated pages running off shared templates. Guides in Wix Blog, every form into Wix contacts, and listings pulled straight from Apex27.

    We switch over

    Your domain points at the new site and old page addresses redirect, so links and rankings carry across. Your email isn't touched.

Yes. You log into Wix exactly as you do now, and your content, blog, forms and contacts are all managed from the same dashboard.

You can. The code behind your site is yours, so it can move to another host or platform, and we'd connect it to its new home for your content instead of rebuilding from scratch. Your CMS content downloads as a spreadsheet file too. That isn't possible with a Wix Editor or Wix Studio site.

Three things. Your content sits in Wix as structured data, so AI search, assistants and apps can use it. Every page has schema, so search engines and AI tools can tell exactly what it's about. No. Only the settings that point visitors to your website change. The ones that deliver your email are left alone.

Yes. Your Premium plan carries on as it is, and it still covers your custom domain and taking payments.

Yes. Studio sites are responsive, but each screen size is still a layout to check and adjust when something changes. On Headless that happens on its own. Everything else applies too: editing from the CMS, SEO on autopilot, quicker new layouts, custom integrations and code you own.
